We welcome Children of Chernobyl
Twenty-six children from the Chernobyl area of the former USSR (now Ukraine), will soon be spending a month’s respite holiday in Norfolk.The children, who range in ages from 7-14, have all been affected by the radiation fallout that followed the disastrous explosion at the nuclear reactor in 1986.
They, and their two interpreters, will be staying with families throughout Norfolk and will be taking part in a series of activities during their stay, including a day out at Wroxham Barns on Monday, June 18.
The children will enjoy meeting and cuddling the animals of Junior Farm and taking in the highs of the children’s funfair. A special party tea has also been laid on by the staff at Wroxham Barns.
Director of Wroxham Barns Ian Russell said, "We are pleased to be able to support this inspired initiative, and the opportunity to give a special day out to these children."
Organiser Michael Snowling added, "For these children, a month spent in Norfolk can enhance their life by the equivalent of two and a half years spent at home."
The cost of the holiday has been met from charitable donations and a series of fund-raising activities including dinner dances, raffles, sponsored walks and race nights.
