Capricorn Minerals Changes Hands
Paul and Toika Razzell, who have moved to Norfolk from Surrey, are the new owners of Capricorn Minerals & Jewellery at Wroxham Barns. Mr and Mrs Razzell purchased the business from Bill and Debbie Ross who have retired. Mr and Mrs Ross ran their business at Wroxham Barns for 22 years.
Paul’s memories of family holidays in Norfolk inspired the couple to explore Norfolk as a potential location for a jewellery business. The Razzells researched the jewellery industry for 18 months, planning to develop a more customer-focussed business, away from their corporate lives working for Homebase and Advance Security UK.
“We viewed a variety of premises throughout Norfolk,” explained Paul Razzell. “But it was my parents, who live at Oulton Broad, who suggested that we explore Wroxham Barns. We met Ian Russell who told us that Bill and Debbie Ross were planning to retire. It was an amazing coincidence. We loved the look of Wroxham Barns and knew that we had found the right place for our business.”
The Razzells have scheduled a shop refit in the New Year and are also looking to develop an e-commerce website. “Bill and Debbie built up a fantastic band of loyal customers. We are very lucky, but we are keen to go further and offer an online facility to make it easier for customers who can only visit infrequently,” said Paul Razzell.
Sylvia Frost, who started working two days a week in 1992 for Bill and Debbie Ross, is staying with Capricorn: “I love working here. It is so bright and colourful and is a fascinating subject. I have learned so much about jewellery and minerals over the years.”
“We hand pick all our jewellery and go for items that you would not find on the high street,” added Toika Razzell. “We are developing our men’s offer, as well as focussing on providing women’s jewellery that will suit all ages and budgets. Good customer service is so important to us; we give the time to help visitors to the Barns understand our jewellery and minerals.”
Minerals range from £1 crystals, which are popular with young collectors, to massive colourful geodes. Healers are also important customers, ordering special crystals for their healing properties.
“The minerals side of the business is equally absorbing,” said Toika Razzell. “Many of our young collectors put pins in maps of the World to show the origin of their purchases. We have great fun chatting to them about the geography of their hobby.”
