Norfolk Pie Challenge
Two Norfolk chefs will be competing at the Produced In Norfolk Farmers' Market on Saturday 10 October (10am to 1pm) to see who can make the tastiest pies. Free samples will be given to visitors who will be asked to vote for their favourite pie maker.
Kelling chef Paul Strety's love of baking came from spending many happy hours cooking with Mrs Gladys Bun from the village who sadly died this year. "She passed on much of her traditional cooking skills to me" says Paul "and that's what good pies are all about- good wholesome local food cooked in the traditional way."
For the competition Paul is producing his new season game pie which will have pheasant, pigeon, rabbit or hare, in a rich red wine gravy with a secret blend of spices and herbs. "I will also be doing my venison pie, because its just very popular with my customers who often come and buy in bulk to freeze them".
Competing against Paul is chef James Nicholls from Swafield who has developed new pork sausage turnovers with caramelized onions, ketchup and mustard. Plus famous pork pies with the addition of chilli jam, or pickle or just plain. James is the cook at home for his family and loves inventing new dishes. "My favourite odd dish is squirrel pie, but I think that might be a bit too adventurous for the competition on Saturday says Paul.
