Patchwork parade

Quilting enthusiasts descended on Wroxham Barns in June for the 2006 Patchwork & Quilting Exhibition, and raised almost 5,000 in the process for the Breast Cancer Resource Fund at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital.

Over 150 quilts were on display, including a collection from a group who belong to the Quilters’ Guild of Northern Ireland and exhibits from ladies who attended quilting workshops over the past two years at Sew Creative, Wroxham Barns’ specialist patchwork & quilting shop..

There was also an area dedicated to the Quilt Challenge, in which competitors from across the UK submitted a quilt on the theme of "Hope - My Story". Sylvia Graham, organiser of the exhibition and owner of Sew Creative, explains more. "Each quilt in this section is required to include at least half of a chosen fabric, but it is up to each quilter how they incorporate that in their design. It is their individual stories and how their hopes are interpreted through their quilts, which makes this area so interesting."

The Quilting Challenge was won by Sue Sidle of North Walsham with a quilt entitled The Messengers inspired by the Greek myth of Pandora’s Box, in which hope remained after evil and darkness had left.

Visitors able saw demonstrations throughout the day by award-winning local tutors and also from the lively and knowledgeable Lilian Hedley, who specialises in Durham wholecloth quilting. Lilian’s entertaining manner and her passion for quilting has made her a popular tutor at previous Sew Creative workshops and she stayed on after the exhibition to teach another 5-day course at Wroxham Barns entitled "How to Design and Mark a Wholecloth Quilt’.

Further information about the exhibition or Lilian Hedley’s workshop are available from Sylvia Graham on 01603 781665.
